Medical Standby Team

UEMSA offers First Aid and Basic Life Support at University of South Florida sanctioned events up to activation of the local Medical Response Unit (MRU) and 911 EMS system for clients at the event location.

All medical standby events are staffed by nationally and state certified Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), and Paramedics.

Volunteer Position Summary:

Education and Experience:

  • Must be a current USF student in good academic standing
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Possess a medical certification (all state and national certifications must be in a Clear/Active status)
    • Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification
    • Florida Paramedic certification
    • UEMSA issued or NREMT issued Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification
  • Possess and maintain current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider CPR certification
  • Current EMR students are allowed to be present at the event, but may not provide patient care

Physical and Working Requirements:

By this position’s very nature, and the very nature of the Emergency Medical field, applicants must meet certain fitness and ability standards. Applicants must have ability to lift and carry up to 35 lbs. Applicants must be able to see, hear, taste, smell, talk, balance, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, use hands, and reach with hands and arms.

Duties are performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments with sick and injured patients. Operation of company equipment. Occasional exposure to hazardous conditions and blood/body fluids.

Uniform Requirements:

Volunteers are required to maintain a clean, neat appearance and be in uniform with ID badge at all times while on shift. All uniform requirements are to be provided by the volunteer. The uniform shirt is provided.

Pants: All-black, long work pants or BDUs with black belt. Scrub pants, jeans, jeggings, sweatpants, track pants, or similar items are prohibited.

Footwear: All-black, close-toed shoes, sneakers, or boots. Cloth, canvas, or similar absorbent textiles are prohibited.

Skin: Visible tattoos on arms must be covered by uniform shirt, long sleeve shirt or compression sleeve. No facial tattoos. Behind-the-ear or small neck tattoos must be in good taste.

Accessories: Face and body piercings are prohibited; only small, stud earrings permitted. No hats or similar headgear is permitted. Head coverings are permitted for religious or cultural reasons (preferably muted colors and designs).

Hair: Must be in neat appearance; no odd or eccentric styles. Color and tones must be of natural shades. Hair may not cover or be able to fall in front of face or eyes. Long hair is required to be tied back or put up in bun, clip, or similar as to not impede with patient care.

Facial hair: Facial hair is permitted so long as it is maintained in a clean and trimmed manner. Facial hair must not interfere with the proper seal of an N95 (or equivalent) mask or other safety equipment (facial hair cannot come between the face and the sealing surface of the mask’s face piece- see specifics).

Tools: Stethoscope, a watch with “seconds” hand or display, and a reliable pen.
